Hasya Yoga – The Yogic Tradition of Mirth & Laughter

Laughter has long been recognised in yoga as a tool for health and emotional balance. In Sanskrit, Hasya (हास्य) means “laughter, joy or mirth,” and it is one of the nine rasas (essential human emotions) Described in classical Indian philosophy, Hāsya rasa represents the light and joyful aspect of our experience, a vital ingredient for emotional and physical wellbeing.

In ancient yogic and Ayurvedic thought, laughter is more than a reaction to humour; it is also used as a natural expression of Prana (life force). Laughing deeply engages the diaphragm and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift into rest and relaxation. Ayurveda considers laughter a daily wellness ritual, helping balance energy by releasing tension and restoring emotional harmony.

The yogic understanding of laughter has been revived in modern times through Laughter Yoga, systematized by Dr. Madan Kataria in the 1990s. He combined intentional laughter and playful vocal sounds with meditation principles. The result is a practice that reconnects us to our natural joy and allows the body to release stored tension - without needing jokes or comedy.

Practicing Hasya Yoga may feel unusual at first, but the body responds automatically. Your mind cannot tell the difference between 'fake' and 'real' laughter, and within minutes you will be laughing spontaneously. Muscles soften, breath deepens, energy lifts and the nervous system finds a gentle reset. In this way, Hasya Yoga is both a somatic practice and a heart-centered ritual - bringing together mind, body and spirit.

Whether you join for a few minutes at the end of a vinyasa class or dedicate time to a full laughter session, the practice reminds us of something ancient and vital: joy is innate, laughter is natural and the expression of both can profoundly nourish us.

Come and experience it for yourself.
